Warning: Deliberate Sugarcane Fires Threaten Industry and Research

The Sugar Research Institute of Fiji (SRIF) has issued a serious warning about the recent rise in intentional sugarcane field fires, labeling these actions as both reckless and criminal.

Dr. Vinesh Kumar, the chief executive officer of SRIF, pointed out the extensive harm these fires inflict not only on farmers but also on the entire sugarcane industry. He emphasized that setting sugarcane fields ablaze intentionally is a criminal act that comes with severe consequences.

“These fires are not merely reckless; they are criminal acts that entail serious repercussions,” Dr. Kumar stated. He noted that SRIF has faced significant losses in important research data due to these fires, data that is typically collected over months or even years and is crucial for fostering evidence-based progress in the sugarcane sector.

Dr. Kumar cautioned that an individual act of arson could obliterate valuable research in a matter of moments, halting progress and adversely affecting the industry’s future. He urged the community to recognize the seriousness of the issue, highlighting that arson undermines the financial stability of farmers and threatens the vital scientific research necessary for the industry’s sustainability and growth.

The SRIF is urging the public to remain alert and report any suspicious activities to the authorities. “By working together, we can safeguard our sugarcane fields, protect essential research, and ensure the ongoing prosperity of our industry,” he added.
