Concerns about environmental issues have been largely overlooked, according to Joeli Veitayaki, a strategic advisor with Blue Prosperity Fiji. He emphasized that the inaction and lack of awareness have resulted in significant environmental degradation.
Veitayaki stated that both authorities and citizens must take responsibility for addressing environmental problems. During a workshop hosted by the Wildlife Conservation Society, he noted that many individuals have become indifferent to these issues, mistakenly believing they are not urgent.
“When we notice something amiss, it is crucial to report it to the relevant authorities so it can be resolved. Sometimes, we fall into the mindset of thinking it’s not our issue, but it truly is,” he explained. He emphasized the importance of being proactive about environmental health, as it directly impacts our lives.
He pointed out that the consequences of delayed action are becoming increasingly apparent, with issues ranging from polluted rivers to accumulating waste on remote islands. Veitayaki stressed that this is a critical moment for action, stating, “This is no longer a time to be complacent but to take decisive steps forward.”
