Residents of the Wailailai Melanesia community on Ovalau celebrated the opening of a new access road last Friday, marking a significant enhancement in transportation to their area. For over forty years, the community struggled with the inconvenience of unloading luggage and groceries far from their homes due to the lack of a suitable road. The newly constructed access road is expected to eliminate these difficulties, making travel easier and more efficient for residents.
Wailailai, situated at a high elevation with stunning views of the Ovalau waters, is home to descendants of Melanesians of Solomon descent. During the inauguration, Assistant Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister Sakiusa Tubuna highlighted the investment of $22,000 from the Office of the Prime Minister in the project. He expressed optimism that the concrete road would permanently resolve the long-standing challenges faced by the Wailailai community.
Mr. Tubuna described the new access road as a symbol of hope, showcasing the resilience and determination of the Wailailai residents. He congratulated the community for their unity in completing the project and encouraged other villages and communities to follow their example. He acknowledged the hardships they endured due to the previous road condition, which prevented public service providers from accessing the area for years and led to residents having to carry heavy loads uphill.
The community’s struggles are now being recognized, and Mr. Tubuna reassured them that the government remains committed to supporting all Fijians, regardless of background. The opening of this road not only enhances connectivity for the Wailailai residents but also represents the promise of better access to essential services and opportunities.
This development brings hope and improvement to the lives of the Wailailai people, reinforcing a sense of community and resilience. It serves as a reminder that with perseverance and collaboration, obstacles can be overcome, leading to a better future.
