Residents of the Wailailai Melanesia community on Ovalau celebrated the official opening of a new access road last Friday, a monumental step forward in improving transport in the region. For over forty years, the absence of a proper roadway had posed significant challenges for residents, who struggled to unload luggage and groceries at a nearby distant point, as vehicles could not reach their homes.
The new access road is expected to eliminate these difficulties, making travel more convenient and efficient for the community. Wailailai, known for its high elevation and stunning views of Ovalau waters, is inhabited by descendants of Solomon Island Melanesians.
During the ceremonial opening, Assistant Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister Sakiusa Tubuna announced an investment of $22,000 by the Office of the Prime Minister for the road’s construction. He highlighted how this infrastructure will significantly ease the hardships faced by the community over the decades.
Mr. Tubuna described the newly built access road as a beacon of hope for the Wailailai Melanesia community, symbolizing their resilience and determination. He expressed his admiration for the collective effort put forth by the residents to complete the project and urged other communities to emulate their unity.
Reflecting on the previous struggles, he noted how the poor condition of the access road had hindered public services and compelled residents to transport heavy loads uphill, a burden they shouldered for far too long. Mr. Tubuna reassured the community of the government’s commitment to assist all Fijians, irrespective of gender, race, or creed.
This new road not only connects the community more effectively but also paves the way for future improvements and support. The anticipated positive changes demonstrate the power of perseverance and collaboration, instilling hope for a brighter future for Wailailai and its residents.
In summary, the opening of this access road is not just about improved transportation; it marks a new chapter for the Wailailai Melanesia community, spurring hope and reinforcing their strength as a unified community.
