Residents of the Wailailai Melanesia community on Ovalau celebrated the opening of a new access road last Friday, a development that promises to significantly enhance transportation in the region. For over 40 years, locals faced the daunting challenge of carrying their luggage and groceries from a distant unloading point, as there had been no proper route for vehicles to reach their homes.
This new road is expected to eliminate this inconvenience, making travel both easier and more efficient. Wailailai, situated at a high elevation overlooking the waters of Ovalau, is home to descendants of Melanesians of Solomon descent.
The road was inaugurated by Assistant Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister, Sakiusa Tubuna, who highlighted the government’s investment of $22,000 into this infrastructure project. He expressed confidence that the concrete access road would effectively address the long-standing difficulties faced by the community, difficulties that have burdened residents for decades.
“This access road symbolizes hope for the Wailailai Melanesia community, reflecting their resilience and perseverance,” Mr. Tubuna remarked. He commended the unity of the community in achieving this milestone, suggesting that their collaborative spirit should serve as a model for other villages and communities in Fiji.
Mr. Tubuna also emphasized the challenges faced by residents due to the former road conditions, including the inability of public service providers to reach the area for several years. He acknowledged the hardship of having to carry groceries uphill and assured the community that those days of struggle are over.
In closing, he reassured residents that the government is committed to supporting all Fijians, regardless of background, reinforcing a message of inclusivity and progress.
This development not only reflects improvement in infrastructure but also symbolizes a positive step towards better community living and accessibility, offering hope for a more connected and supportive future for the Wailailai residents.
