Employers and employees should be aware that the national minimum wage for ten sectoral categories has increased by 50 cents as of the beginning of this month. Agni Deo Singh, the Minister for Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations, announced that wages will see an additional rise of another 50 cents starting April 1, 2025, for both the formal and informal sectors.
Singh urged all employers who are subject to the National Minimum Wages (Amendment) Regulations 2022, as well as those in the ten sectoral industries affected by the Wages (Amendment) Regulations 2022, to update their wage records accordingly.
He emphasized that employers are required to post a written notice regarding the updated wage rates in their workplaces to inform workers of the increase. The ministry’s Labour Standards and Compliance Team will continue to conduct inspections to ensure that the first phase of the wage increase is implemented across all workplaces in Fiji.
Singh warned that failure to display the new regulations could result in a penalty of $100 imposed by ministry enforcement officers. If an employer fails to comply with the fixed penalty notice, they may face a fine of up to $10,000 or a prison term of up to two years, or both. Corporations could incur a fine of up to $50,000.
