Wage Hike Alert: Are You Prepared for the 50-Cent Increase?

Employers and employees should be aware that the national minimum wage for ten sectoral categories has risen by 50 cents, effective from the beginning of this month.

Agni Deo Singh, the Minister for Employment, Productivity, and Industrial Relations, announced that wages are set to increase by an additional 50 cents on April 1, 2025, applying to both the formal and informal sectors.

He urged all employers affected by the National Minimum Wages (Amendment) Regulations 2022 and the ten sectoral industries covered under the Wages (Amendment) Regulations 2022 to update their wage records accordingly.

“Employers are required to display a written notice regarding the updated wage rates in their workplaces to inform workers about the increase,” Singh stated.

The ministry’s Labour Standards and Compliance Team will continue conducting inspections to ensure that the initial wage increase is being implemented across all workplaces in Fiji.

Employers who fail to display these regulations may face a penalty of $100 from the ministry’s enforcement officers. Additionally, non-compliance with the fixed penalty notice could result in a conviction punishable by a fine of up to $10,000, a prison term not exceeding two years, or both. For corporate entities, fines could reach up to $50,000.
