The Ministry of Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations is calling on all employers affected by the NMW (Amendment) Regulations 2022, along with the 10 designated sectoral industries, to update their wage records appropriately. This announcement follows an increase in the National Minimum Wage and sectoral wages by 50 cents starting from August 1, with an additional 50-cent increase planned for April 1, 2025, applicable to both formal and informal sectors.
The ten specified industries include Building and Civil and Electrical Engineering Trades, Hotel and Catering Trades, Manufacturing, Mining and Quarrying, Printing Trades, Sawmilling and Logging, Security Services, Wholesale and Retail Trades, the Garment Industry, and Road Transport.
Minister Agni Deo Singh stated that the Ministry’s Labour Standards and Compliance Team will continue conducting inspections to monitor the implementation of these wage increases across all workplaces in Fiji, ensuring that workers receive the correct pay rates.
Employers must prominently display a written notice regarding the updated wage rates within their workplaces to inform employees of the changes.
Failure to comply will result in a $100 penalty imposed by the Ministry’s Enforcement Officers. Should an employer neglect to adhere to the fixed penalty notice, they may face a fine of up to $10,000, a prison sentence of up to two years, or both. For corporations, the fine could reach a maximum of $50,000.
