The Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) has begun the search for a new Chief Executive Officer to replace Dr. Amit Chanan, who has decided not to renew his contract, which is set to expire in March 2025. Under Dr. Chanan’s leadership, the WAF achieved remarkable milestones, including the completion of the Viria Water Treatment Plant, one of the largest water infrastructure projects in the South Pacific. He was also instrumental in developing the Water Sector 2050 Strategy, a visionary initiative aimed at securing sustainable water and sanitation services in Fiji, backed by an estimated investment of $8.5 billion over the next three decades.

WAF is now seeking a candidate with over 10 years of senior management experience in engineering and technical fields related to water or wastewater projects. The ideal candidate will have proven leadership abilities, experience in strategic partnerships, and expertise in business planning and financial management.

As the transition unfolds, WAF’s Chairman Ratu Savenaca Seniloli has expressed respect for Dr. Chanan’s decision and acknowledges the opportunities that change in leadership can bring. This leadership shift is viewed positively, as it opens the door for new strategies and innovative approaches to enhance Fiji’s water services, which are crucial to the community’s well-being.

This change can be seen as a revitalization opportunity for WAF, paving the way for future advancements in addressing Fiji’s water and sanitation challenges. The pursuit of a new CEO is aligned with WAF’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and development, ensuring that the needs of the population are met effectively for generations to come.

In summary, the coming leadership change at WAF reflects hope for continued progress and innovation in Fiji’s critical water infrastructure, ultimately benefiting the nation’s communities.
