Vunilagi has been recognized as a potential port of entry in Vanua Levu, according to sources in the aviation sector. Following an offer of land by the paramount chief of Cakaudrove and Parliament Speaker Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu for the development of a new airport at Vunilagi, many business leaders are optimistic about the project’s feasibility.

Savusavu Chamber of Commerce president Avikash Pillay expressed hope for the initiative, noting that Vunilagi is approximately a 30-minute drive from Savusavu Town and features ample flat land. He pointed out that the current Savusavu Airport’s runway is inadequate for larger aircraft, posing challenges for the tourism sector. A new airport, he argued, would significantly boost tourism in the region.

Pillay also mentioned that government officials are exploring the possibilities of establishing an airport at Vunilagi.

In addition, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism Viliame Gavoka highlighted that Nasarawaqa in Bua is another potential location for an international airport. He noted that since the launch of the NaVualiku tourism development project, the World Bank has identified additional site options. Gavoka acknowledged the community’s demand for an international airport and confirmed that the government is actively pursuing the matter, with an announcement expected by the end of the year.
