Aviation insiders have pointed to Vunilagi in Vanua Levu as a potential new port of entry. This possibility emerged after the paramount chief of Cakaudrove and the Speaker of Parliament, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, proposed making land available for a new airport in the area. Numerous business leaders are optimistic about the project, including Avikash Pillay, president of the Savusavu Chamber of Commerce.
Mr. Pillay emphasized the advantages of Vunilagi, noting its proximity—just a 30-minute drive from Savusavu Town—and its flat, spacious terrain. He expressed concern about the current Savusavu Airport, stating that its limited runway space makes it unsuitable for larger aircraft, which poses ongoing challenges for the tourism sector. As the Northern Division’s top tourist destination, a new airport could significantly increase visitor numbers.
Additionally, government officials are exploring the feasibility of developing an airport in Vunilagi. Last year, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism Viliame Gavoka highlighted Nasarawaqa in Bua as another possible location for an international airport. He mentioned that since the launch of the NaVualiku tourism development project, the World Bank has identified various potential sites. Mr. Gavoka assured that the government is mindful of public interest regarding the international airport and anticipates making an announcement by the end of the year.
