AJ Pallets Ba River, the reigning under-21 champions from Votua village in Ba, displayed their prowess and resolve on the opening day of the tournament, reaffirming their status as the team to beat.
They started their campaign with an impressive 12-0 win against Midland and followed it up with a commanding 31-5 victory over Namara, clearly showing their competitive spirit.
Coach Mikaele Nawaikada expressed pride in his team’s performance but also recognized the challenges that come with being the titleholders.
“Although we had a slow start, I’m pleased that the boys performed well. It’s tough when you carry the target on your back, but they worked hard and adhered to the plan,” he remarked.
Nawaikada pointed out that with the championship at stake, the team understands the importance of not becoming complacent.
“Every team is aiming to take us down, so we have to intensify our focus in the upcoming matches. We’re approaching it one game at a time, but the boys are eager to maintain hold of this trophy,” he stated.
In addition to their performance on the field, the team has received accolades for their discipline and teamwork—qualities that Nawaikada believes will support them through more demanding challenges.
“It’s all about preparation and mindset. We have a long journey ahead, but if the boys continue to play like this, we’ll be in a strong position,” he added.
The next pool match will be vital as they aim to secure a place in the knockout rounds and continue their quest to retain the championship.
