Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources, Filimone Vosarogo, has expressed strong criticisms towards Sipiriano Nariva, the chairman of Namosi landowners’ representative group, Lomani Au Maroroi Au (LAMA). Vosarogo stated that it is regrettable that Nariva seems to echo the sentiments of his activist influences, rather than engaging with the established protocols of the landowning community.

In his comments, Minister Vosarogo emphasized the importance of adhering to traditional land management structures recognized within the iTaukei community, including the Tokatoka, Mataqali, and Yavusa. He pointed out that these traditional units have designated roles and representatives, as well as formal meetings such as the Bose Vakoro, Bose Ni Tikina, and Bose Ni Yasana, which provide structured governance over land matters.

Vosarogo questioned the legitimacy of LAMA’s role, asking where it fits within the traditional framework of land authority and representation established by the Vanua and iTaukei administration. He challenged Nariva’s claim of representation, seeking clarity on the authority he holds.

This discourse reflects the ongoing dialogue regarding land rights and leadership within the Namosi region. It also underscores the importance of maintaining traditional governance structures in discussions about land ownership and representation.

In light of this situation, there is hope that these discussions will lead to greater understanding and collaboration between landowners, activists, and government officials, ultimately fostering unity and respectful dialogue about land management in Fiji.
