Village’s Bold Move to Protect Children Sparks Drug War

A village in the western region is taking initiative to address the ongoing social challenges in the nation. The Vanua O Betoraurau Sabeto has implemented strict measures aimed at protecting its youth.

At the entrance of Sabeto Village, a prominent sign displays clear rules, which include:
– Children and students are prohibited from roaming the village after 9 PM.
– All village entrances will be closed by 10 PM.

Village headman Josefa Naikovea emphasized that the Momo na Tui Sabeto, Ratu Viliame Mataitoga, is committed to enforcing these regulations. He noted that the presence of illicit drugs has raised significant concerns, citing the discovery of needles in the five villages of the Sabeto area.

“We have enacted these laws to protect our children, who are at risk of being exploited by outsiders introducing drugs into the area,” he stated. Following the Tui Sabeto’s installation earlier this year, he convened a meeting with the leaders of the seven Yavusa groups under the Vanua O Betoraurau to discuss these directives.

“We are taking these measures to ensure the safety of our children, who represent the future,” he added. The village leaders are united in their fight against drugs, and Mr. Naikovea affirmed that those who do not comply with the new rules will face disciplinary actions.

During a recent Ba Provincial Meeting in Namoli, the community was urged to establish strict regulations to combat the issue of illicit drugs. Any individual found dealing in these substances will face expulsion from the village. “It’s crucial that every villager understands the importance of this battle against drugs,” he concluded.
