Life in the village offers a unique set of advantages and challenges, particularly in today’s fast-paced world where individuals are constantly striving to meet financial demands. The conventional city narrative often involves pursuing education, securing a job, and managing various expenses. In contrast, village life tends to provide a more serene and less stressful environment.
Tupa Rarawa, a 39-year-old from Urone, Vanuabalavu in Lau, grew up with strong ties to Susui Village. He has experienced both the urban and rural lifestyles and firmly believes that village living is considerably easier and more liberating. “We were raised in an environment where our food comes from our own farms,” he shared. He emphasized that although village life reduces the burden of utility bills and rent, it still requires hard work to sustain oneself.
Embodying the philosophy of “Chop your own wood, and it will warm you twice,” Tupa finds value in hard work and patience, which he views as vital to achieving his goals. He insists that survival in the world comes from effort, contrasting it with life in the city where the focus is primarily on working to pay bills rather than providing directly for oneself and one’s family.
Reflecting on his youth, Tupa expressed a desire to have prioritized his studies more during his school years, acknowledging the strong influence of peer pressure at the time. Today, Tupa works as a waiter at Hot Pot Restaurant in Suva. In his three months on the job, he has dedicated his earnings to renovating his family home back in Vanuabalavu, showcasing his commitment to supporting his loved ones.
Tupa encourages children today to embrace education, which is accessible, and to perform well academically to make their parents proud. “Study hard for a bright future, and to be able to help your parents later in life,” he advises, shedding light on the importance of education and family values in building a successful life.
In summary, Tupa Rarawa’s story highlights the contrast between the hectic city life and the more relaxed village existence, underscoring the importance of hard work, education, and familial support. His journey serves as an inspiring reminder that dedication and a strong work ethic can lead to a fulfilling life while maintaining strong connections to one’s roots.
This perspective not only provides insight into the advantages of village life but also serves as a motivation for the younger generation to deeply value their education and family bonds.
