Village Unites to Combat Drug Crisis and Protect Children

A village in the West is taking proactive steps to address ongoing social issues in the country. The Vanua O Betoraurau Sabeto is implementing stringent regulations within the village to protect its children.

At the entrance to Sabeto Village, a prominently displayed sign features clear directives including:

– Children and students are prohibited from roaming the village after 9pm.
– All village entrances will be secured by 10pm.

Village headman Josefa Naikovea stated that the Momo na Tui Sabeto, Ratu Viliame Mataitoga, is committed to these measures. “One of our primary concerns is the prevalence of illicit drugs, with needles discovered in the five villages of the Sabeto area,” he remarked.

“We have instituted these regulations because our children are at risk. They can be exploited by outsiders to facilitate drug smuggling. After the Tui Sabeto’s appointment earlier this year, a meeting was held with the seven Yavusa heads under the Vanua o Betoraurau. These laws come as a directive from the Tui Sabeto.”

Naikovea emphasized that the initiative is aimed at ensuring the safety of children, who are viewed as the future of the community. “Our traditional leaders are committed to protecting their people.”

He also mentioned that all village heads in the Vanua O Betoraurau Sabeto are collaborating in the fight against drugs. Disciplinary actions will be enforced for those who violate these regulations.

During the recent Ba Provincial Meeting in Namoli, there was an emphasis on establishing strict laws to combat the drug issue. Anyone found involved in drug trafficking will be expelled from the village.

“We have been informed that it is crucial for every villager to understand the importance of this battle against drugs,” he added.
