Village Takes Charge: Bold Moves to Protect Children from Drug Threats

A village in the western region is taking proactive steps to address ongoing social issues within the country. The Vanua O Betoraurau Sabeto is implementing strict regulations to protect its children.

At the entrance of Sabeto Village, a prominent sign displays clear guidelines, including:

– Children and students are prohibited from roaming the village after 9 PM.
– All village entrances will be locked by 10 PM.

Village headman Josefa Naikovea emphasized the seriousness of these measures as directed by the Momo na Tui Sabeto, Ratu Viliame Mataitoga. He expressed concern about the rising issue of drug use, particularly the discovery of needles in the five villages within the Sabeto area.

“We have instituted these laws because our children are at risk. Outsiders could exploit them to smuggle drugs into our community,” Naikovea stated. Following the installation of the Tui Sabeto earlier this year, a meeting was held with the heads of the seven Yavusa under the Vanua o Betoraurau to discuss these urgent matters.

“These regulations have been mandated by the Tui Sabeto. Our children are our future, and we must protect them. Our traditional leaders are committed to safeguarding their community,” he added.

Naikovea mentioned that all village leaders in the Vanua O Betoraurau Sabeto are united in the fight against drug issues, and disciplinary actions will be taken against those who violate the regulations. During the Ba Provincial Meeting in Namoli, the leaders were encouraged to enforce stringent laws concerning illicit drug use.

Anyone found dealing with drugs will face expulsion from the village. “We have been informed that it is crucial for every villager to understand the importance of this battle against drugs,” he concluded.
