Village Takes Bold Steps to Protect Children from Rising Drug Threats

A village in the West is taking proactive steps to address ongoing social issues in the country. The Vanua O Betoraurau Sabeto has implemented strict regulations to protect its children.

At the entrance of Sabeto Village, a prominent sign outlines the new rules, which include:

– Children and students are prohibited from moving around the village after 9 PM.
– All village entrances or gates will be closed after 10 PM.

Village headman Josefa Naikovea stated that the Momo na Tui Sabeto, Ratu Viliame Mataitoga, is firmly committed to enforcing these measures. “One of our major concerns is the issue of illicit drugs, with needles being discovered in the five villages in the Sabeto area,” he explained. “We have imposed these laws because our children are vulnerable and can be exploited by outsiders for drug trafficking.”

Following the appointment of Tui Sabeto earlier this year, a meeting took place with the seven Yavusa heads within the Vanua o Betoraurau. “These laws are directed by the Tui Sabeto,” Naikovea emphasized. “Our goal is to protect our children, who represent our future. Our traditional leaders are dedicated to safeguarding their communities.”

He also mentioned that all village heads in the Vanua O Betoraurau Sabeto are collaborating in the fight against drugs. Disciplinary measures will be enforced for those who fail to comply with the regulations. “During the Ba Provincial Meeting in Namoli, we were urged to establish strict laws regarding illicit drugs,” he added. “Any individual caught dealing with these drugs will be expelled from the village.”

Naikovea concluded by stating the importance of awareness among villagers regarding the critical nature of the fight against drugs.
