A village in the West is stepping up to address the ongoing social issues affecting the nation. The Vanua O Betoraurau Sabeto has implemented strict regulations within the village to protect its children.
At the entrance of Sabeto Village, a prominent sign provides clear instructions, including:
– Children and students are prohibited from moving around the village after 9 PM.
– All village gates will be closed by 10 PM.
Village headman Josefa Naikovea noted that the Momo na Tui Sabeto, Ratu Viliame Mataitoga, is committed to these regulations. He expressed concern over the involvement of illicit drugs, with needles discovered in several villages within the Sabeto area.
“We have established these rules because our children are at risk. They could be exploited by outsiders to trafficking drugs,” he stated.
Following the Tui Sabeto’s installation earlier this year, a meeting was held with the heads of the seven Yavusa under the Vanua O Betoraurau. These regulations are a directive from the Tui Sabeto.
“We are implementing these measures to ensure the safety of our children, who represent our future. Our traditional leaders are dedicated to protecting their community,” Naikovea emphasized.
He mentioned that all village leaders within the Vanua O Betoraurau Sabeto are uniting in the fight against drugs. Disciplinary action will be taken against those who disregard the established rules.
During a recent Ba Provincial Meeting held in Namoli, the community was urged to enforce strict regulations concerning the drug issue. Any individual found involved in drug dealing will be expelled from the village.
“We have been informed about the critical need for every villager to understand the significance of this battle against drugs,” he added.
