Village Takes Bold Steps to Protect Children from Drug Threats

A village in the West is taking proactive steps to address the ongoing social issues affecting the country. The Vanua O Betoraurau Sabeto has implemented strict regulations aimed at protecting their children.

At the entrance of Sabeto Village, a prominent sign displays important rules, including:

– Children and students are prohibited from roaming within the village after 9 p.m.
– All village entrances or gates will be closed by 10 p.m.

Village headman Josefa Naikovea emphasized the commitment of Momo na Tui Sabeto, Ratu Viliame Mataitoga, to these regulations. He expressed concern about the rising problem of illicit drugs, highlighting the discovery of needles in the five villages located in the Sabeto area.

“We have instituted these laws to protect our children, who are at risk of being exploited by outsiders to facilitate drug trafficking,” Naikovea stated.

Following the installation of the Tui Sabeto earlier this year, a meeting was convened with the seven Yavusa heads under the Vanua o Betoraurau to discuss these measures. Naikovea noted that the regulations originate from the Tui Sabeto’s directives.

“This initiative aims to protect our children—the future of our community. Our traditional leaders are determined to safeguard their people,” he remarked.

All village heads within the Vanua O Betoraurau Sabeto are cooperating in the fight against drugs. Naikovea warned that disciplinary actions will be enforced for those who fail to comply with the regulations.

During a recent Ba Provincial Meeting held in Namoli, the community was encouraged to establish stringent laws tackling drug-related issues. Any individual caught dealing in illicit drugs will face expulsion from the village.

“We all need to understand the significance of this fight against drugs,” Naikovea added.
