Village Takes Bold Steps to Protect Children from Drug Threats

A village in the western region is taking proactive steps to address ongoing social issues in the country. The Vanua O Betoraurau Sabeto has implemented strict regulations within its community to protect its children.

At the entrance of Sabeto Village, a prominent sign displays important rules, including the following:
– Children and students are prohibited from wandering in the village after 9 PM;
– All village entrances will be closed after 10 PM.

Village headman Josefa Naikovea mentioned that the Momo na Tui Sabeto, Ratu Viliame Mataitoga, is committed to these measures. “One of our main concerns is the presence of illicit drugs, with needles found in the five villages in the Sabeto area,” he explained. “We have established these regulations to protect our children, who are at risk of being exploited by outsiders to transport these drugs.”

After the recent appointment of Tui Sabeto earlier this year, he held a meeting with the seven Yavusa heads under the Vanua o Betoraurau to discuss these regulations, which are an initiative from the Tui Sabeto.

“We are doing this to safeguard our children, who represent the future,” Naikovea stated. “Our traditional leaders are committed to protecting our community.” He emphasized that all village heads within the Vanua O Betoraurau Sabeto are collaborating in the fight against drugs.

Naikovea warned that disciplinary measures would be enforced for those who fail to comply with the new laws. At a recent Ba Provincial Meeting in Namoli, participants were urged to establish strict regulations to combat the issue of illicit drugs. Anyone found dealing with these substances will face expulsion from the village.

“We have been informed that it is crucial for every villager to recognize the significance of this struggle against drugs,” he added.
