Village Takes Bold Stand for Children’s Safety Amid Drug Concerns

A village in the west is taking proactive steps to address pressing social issues in the nation. The Vanua O Betoraurau Sabeto has implemented strict regulations aimed at protecting its children.

At the entrance of Sabeto Village, a prominent sign displays clear directives, including:

– Children and students are not permitted to be outside within the village after 9pm.
– All village entrances will be closed after 10pm.

Village headman Josefa Naikovea emphasized that the Momo na Tui Sabeto, Ratu Viliame Mataitoga, is committed to these measures. He expressed concern over illicit drug use, noting that needles have been discovered in five villages within the Sabeto area.

“We have enacted these laws because our children are vulnerable and could be exploited by outsiders to transport these drugs,” he stated. Following the Tui Sabeto’s appointment earlier this year, a meeting was convened with the seven Yavusa heads under the Vanua O Betoraurau to discuss these regulations.

“These laws are a directive from the Tui Sabeto. We are doing this to protect our children, who represent our future. Our traditional leaders are dedicated to safeguarding their community.”

Naikovea mentioned that all village heads within the Vanua O Betoraurau Sabeto are collaborating in the campaign against drugs. He warned that disciplinary actions will be taken against those who violate the laws.

During the Ba Provincial Meeting in Namoli, community leaders were encouraged to establish stringent laws concerning the drug issue. Those caught dealing in illegal drugs will be expelled from the village.

“We have been informed that every villager must understand the significance of this fight against drugs,” he added.
