A village in the West is taking a proactive approach to address pressing social issues in the nation. The Vanua O Betoraurau Sabeto has implemented stringent measures aimed at protecting their children.
At the entrance of Sabeto Village, a prominent sign outlines clear regulations such as:
– Children and students are prohibited from moving within the village after 9 PM.
– All village entrances or gates will be sealed after 10 PM.
Village headman Josefa Naikovea emphasized that the Momo na Tui Sabeto, Ratu Viliame Mataitoga, is committed to these initiatives. “One of our main concerns is the rise of illicit drug use, with needles discovered in the five villages of the Sabeto area,” he stated.
“We have established these rules because our children are at risk, and they could be exploited by outsiders to traffic these drugs. After the Tui Sabeto was appointed earlier this year, he convened a meeting with the heads of the seven Yavusa groups under Vanua o Betoraurau. These laws are a directive from the Tui Sabeto.”
He reiterated, “Our goal is to protect our children, who represent the future. Our traditional leaders are dedicated to safeguarding their people.” Mr. Naikovea noted that all village heads in the Vanua O Betoraurau Sabeto are collaborating in the fight against drugs.
He mentioned that strict disciplinary actions would be enforced for those who violate these laws. During the Ba Provincial Meeting in Namoli, participants were encouraged to establish firm regulations concerning the issue of illicit drugs. Any individual caught dealing in drugs will be expelled from the village. “We have been informed that it is essential for every villager to understand the significance of this battle against drugs,” he added.
