Village Takes Bold Stand Against Drugs to Protect Children

A village in the western region of the country is taking proactive steps to address ongoing social issues. The Vanua O Betoraurau Sabeto is implementing strict regulations to protect local children.

At Sabeto Village’s entrance, a prominent sign outlines key rules, including:

– Children and students are not permitted to roam the village after 9 PM.
– All village gates will be closed by 10 PM.

Village headman Josefa Naikovea emphasized that the Momo na Tui Sabeto, Ratu Viliame Mataitoga, is committed to enforcing these measures. He expressed concern over the rising use of illicit drugs in the area, noting that needles have been found across five villages in Sabeto.

Naikovea explained, “We have instituted these laws because our children are vulnerable and may be exploited by outsiders to introduce drugs into our community.” He mentioned that following the Tui Sabeto’s installation earlier this year, he convened a meeting with the heads of the seven clans in the Vanua O Betoraurau to discuss these laws, which are a directive from the Tui Sabeto.

“Our commitment is to ensure the safety of our children, who are the future,” he stated, reaffirming that traditional leaders are dedicated to protecting their community. Naikovea noted that all village heads within the Vanua O Betoraurau Sabeto are collaborating in the fight against drugs. He warned that disciplinary actions would be taken against those who fail to comply with the new regulations.

During the recent Ba Provincial Meeting in Namoli, officials encouraged the establishment of stringent laws to combat the issue of illicit drugs. Villagers caught dealing with drugs will face expulsion from the community. Naikovea added, “It is crucial for every villager to understand the importance of this fight against drugs.”
