Village Takes Bold Stand Against Drugs to Protect Children

A village in the West is taking proactive steps to address social issues affecting the country. The Vanua O Betoraurau Sabeto has implemented strict regulations aimed at protecting children in the community.

At the entrance of Sabeto Village, a prominent sign outlines key guidelines, including:

– Children and students are prohibited from being outside the village after 9pm.
– All gates to the village will close by 10pm.

Village headman Josefa Naikovea emphasized the seriousness of these measures as mandated by Momo na Tui Sabeto, Ratu Viliame Mataitoga. He expressed concern regarding the presence of illicit drugs, noting that needles had been discovered in the five villages within the Sabeto area.

“The implementation of these regulations is crucial because our children are at risk and may be exploited by outsiders for drug trafficking,” he explained. Naikovea mentioned that discussions regarding these measures took place during a meeting with the seven Yavusa heads following the Tui Sabeto’s installation earlier this year.

He stressed, “We are taking these steps to protect our children, who represent our future.” The traditional leaders are united in their effort against drug abuse, with all village heads in the Vanua O Betoraurau Sabeto collaborating in this initiative.

Naikovea indicated that disciplinary measures would be enforced against those who violate these laws. During a recent Ba Provincial Meeting in Namoli, community leaders were encouraged to adopt stringent regulations regarding drug-related issues. Individuals found dealing in illicit drugs will be expelled from the village.

“We have been made aware that it’s vital for every villager to understand the significance of this fight against drugs,” he added.
