Village Takes Bold Stand Against Drugs to Protect Children

A village in the West is taking proactive steps to address ongoing social issues affecting the nation. The Vanua O Betoraurau Sabeto is implementing strict regulations to protect its children.

At the entrance of Sabeto Village, a prominent sign outlines key rules including:

– Children and students are prohibited from roaming within the village after 9 PM.
– All village entrances will be locked after 10 PM.

Village headman Josefa Naikovea emphasized the seriousness of these measures, as directed by Momo na Tui Sabeto, Ratu Viliame Mataitoga. Naikovea expressed concern regarding the presence of illegal drugs and needles discovered in the five villages of the Sabeto region.

“Our children are vulnerable and could be exploited by outsiders to traffic drugs,” he stated. Following the Tui Sabeto’s installation earlier this year, a meeting was held with the heads of seven Yavusa under the Vanua o Betoraurau to initiate these laws.

“These regulations aim to protect our children, who are the promise of our future. Our traditional leaders are committed to safeguarding their communities,” Naikovea continued.

He noted that all village leaders in the Vanua O Betoraurau Sabeto are collaborating in the fight against drug abuse. Disciplinary measures will be enforced against individuals who disregard these laws.

At a Ba Provincial Meeting held in Namoli, the community was encouraged to establish strict policies to combat the drug issue. Individuals caught participating in drug dealing will face eviction from the village.

Naikovea stressed the importance of unity among villagers in this battle against drugs.
