A village in the West is taking proactive steps to address the ongoing social issues in the country. The Vanua O Betoraurau Sabeto is implementing strict regulations to protect their children.
At the entrance of Sabeto Village, a prominent sign displays important rules, including:
– Children and students are prohibited from moving around the village after 9 PM.
– All entrances or gates to the village will be closed after 10 PM.
Village headman Josefa Naikovea emphasized that Momo na Tui Sabeto, Ratu Viliame Mataitoga, is committed to these measures. He expressed concern over the increasing presence of illicit drugs, with needles reportedly found in five villages within the Sabeto area.
“We have established these laws because our children are vulnerable and may be exploited by outsiders to facilitate drug trafficking,” Naikovea stated. “Following the installation of the Tui Sabeto earlier this year, a meeting was convened with the seven Yavusa leaders under the Vanua o Betoraurau.”
These regulations are in accordance with directives from the Tui Sabeto. Naikovea remarked, “We are taking these actions to protect our children, who represent our future. Our traditional leaders are dedicated to safeguarding their community.”
He mentioned that all village heads within the Vanua O Betoraurau Sabeto are collaborating in the fight against drugs. Disciplinary measures will be enforced for those who fail to comply with these laws.
During the recent Ba Provincial Meeting in Namoli, the community was encouraged to establish stringent regulations to combat drug-related issues. Individuals caught dealing illicit drugs will face expulsion from the village.
“We have been briefed on the significance of this fight against drugs, and it is essential for every villager to understand its importance,” Naikovea added.
