Village Takes Bold Stand Against Drug Crisis to Protect Children

A village in the West is taking significant steps to address the ongoing social issues affecting the country. The Vanua O Betoraurau Sabeto is implementing stringent regulations within the community to protect its children.

At the entrance of Sabeto Village, a prominent sign displays clear instructions:
– Children and students are prohibited from moving about the village after 9 PM.
– All village entrances will be locked after 10 PM.

Village headman Josefa Naikovea emphasized the commitment of Momo na Tui Sabeto, Ratu Viliame Mataitoga, to these new measures. He voiced concerns regarding the presence of illicit drugs in the area, mentioning that needles have been found across five villages in the Sabeto region.

Naikovea explained, “These regulations are necessary because our children are particularly vulnerable and can be exploited by outsiders involved in drug trafficking.”

Following the Tui Sabeto’s installation earlier this year, a meeting was convened with the heads of seven Yavusa under the Vanua O Betoraurau to discuss these measures, which are directives from the Tui Sabeto.

“We are implementing these laws to ensure the safety of our children, who represent our future. Our traditional leaders are dedicated to protecting our community,” Naikovea added.

He also noted that all village leaders within Vanua O Betoraurau Sabeto are collaborating in the fight against drugs. Mr. Naikovea stated that disciplinary measures would be enforced for those who do not comply with the rules. During the Ba Provincial Meeting in Namoli, the importance of establishing strict laws to combat drug issues was underscored.

Anyone found engaging in drug-related activities will be expelled from the village. “Every villager must understand the significance of this fight against drugs,” he concluded.
