Village Takes Bold Stand Against Drug Crisis

A village in the western region is taking significant steps to address social issues affecting the nation. The Vanua O Betoraurau Sabeto has implemented stringent measures to protect the safety and well-being of children in the community.

A prominent sign at the entrance of Sabeto Village outlines critical regulations, including:

– No children or students are permitted to be outside in the village after 9 PM.
– All village gates will close by 10 PM.

Village headman Josefa Naikovea emphasized that Momo na Tui Sabeto, Ratu Viliame Mataitoga, is committed to these regulations. He expressed concern over the presence of illicit drugs, citing reports of needles being discovered in multiple villages within the Sabeto area.

“We have created these rules to protect our vulnerable children, who could be exploited by outsiders to traffic drugs,” Naikovea stated. He noted that following the Tui Sabeto’s installation earlier this year, a meeting was convened with the heads of seven Yavusa under the Vanua o Betoraurau to discuss these urgent issues.

“These regulations are directives from the Tui Sabeto,” he added. “Our goal is to ensure the safety of our children, who represent our future. Our traditional leaders are dedicated to safeguarding their communities.”

He mentioned that all village leaders within the Vanua O Betoraurau Sabeto are collaborating in the fight against drugs. Naikovea warned that disciplinary measures would be enforced against those who violate these laws.

During a recent Ba Provincial Meeting in Namoli, attendees were encouraged to establish strict guidelines to combat drug-related problems. Anyone found dealing in illicit drugs will face expulsion from the village.

“We have been informed that it is crucial for every villager to understand the importance of this battle against drugs,” he concluded.
