Village Takes a Stand: Strict Measures to Protect Children from Drug Threats

A village in the western region is spearheading efforts to address the ongoing social issues in the country. The Vanua O Betoraurau Sabeto has implemented strict measures within the community to protect its children.

At the entrance of Sabeto Village, a prominent sign displays clear regulations, including:

– Children and students are prohibited from being outside the village after 9pm.
– All village gates will be closed after 10pm.

Village headman Josefa Naikovea emphasized that Momo na Tui Sabeto, Ratu Viliame Mataitoga, is committed to these initiatives.

“We are particularly concerned about the presence of illicit drugs, as needles have been discovered in the five villages surrounding Sabeto,” he stated. “These rules have been established because our children are at risk and might be exploited by outsiders to facilitate drug trafficking.”

Following the Tui Sabeto’s appointment earlier this year, he held a meeting with the seven Yavusa heads from the Vanua o Betoraurau.

“These regulations are mandated by the Tui Sabeto,” Naikovea continued. “Our primary goal is to protect our children, who represent the future of our village. Our traditional leaders are dedicated to the welfare of their communities.”

He also mentioned that all village chiefs within the Vanua O Betoraurau Sabeto are collaborating in the fight against drugs. Naikovea reminded residents that there would be disciplinary measures for those who disregard these laws.

During a recent Ba Provincial Meeting in Namoli, participants were encouraged to establish robust regulations to combat the issue of illicit drugs. Anyone caught dealing in such substances will be expelled from the village.

“We are committed to ensuring that every villager understands the significance of this battle against drugs,” he added.
