The Village Boys rugby team is gearing up for the 2025 McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast 7s, which commences next Thursday and runs through Saturday at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka. As one of the 16 youth teams chosen to participate in Fiji’s top sevens tournament, they have been diligently training at the YMCA gym in Suva for the past weeks, although player attendance has been affected by the festive season.
Vice-captain Tevita Driwa acknowledged the challenges posed by the incomplete squad but emphasized the team’s determination. “The numbers here do not reflect the full squad that we have. Some more of our boys are expected to join us later on in the week as we continue with our preparation,” he stated. Despite the situation, the committed players are focused on their goals.
Driwa expressed the team’s ambition, saying, “We have boys from all corners of the country in this team. Every team trains to win and we are no different. Our target is to win the youth division at the Coral Coast 7s.” The Vice-captain also indicated that they would not be deterred by the reigning youth champions, the Dominion Brothers, if they face off against them. He is confident that sticking to their game plan and utilizing their strengths will bring them closer to victory.
The Village Boys have shown promise by winning the youth division of the Fiji Bitter Nacula Yasawa 7s in Lautoka in December 2024 and reaching the semi-finals of the Fiji Bitter Wairiki 7s shortly after. Their consistent performance illustrates their potential as they head into the Coral Coast 7s with high hopes.
This spirited determination from the Village Boys highlights the vibrant youth rugby scene in Fiji and the incredible opportunities for young athletes to prove themselves on a grand stage, fostering both skill development and sportsmanship. With the tournament approaching, fans can look forward to an exciting display of talent and determination from this emerging team.
