Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection Lynda Tabuya has called on the public to stay alert regarding the implications of technological progress and the growing internet access among Fijians. Her comments follow a partnership between Vodafone Fiji and Starlink, aimed at enhancing telecommunications infrastructure, especially for rural and maritime communities.
While this partnership is viewed as a significant step towards improved connectivity, it raises concerns about an increase in access to pornography and adult content. According to Tabuya, Fiji ranks fourth in Google searches for porn, and adult materials are among the top ten data traffic categories in the country.
As the co-chair of the anti-pornography taskforce, Tabuya urged telecommunications providers and stakeholders to take proactive steps. She emphasized the need for awareness sessions in communities to educate the public on responsible internet and social media usage. These sessions would address the dangers of excessive screen time and the risks associated with exposure to inappropriate content.
Tabuya highlighted the importance of equipping citizens with the knowledge to navigate the digital landscape safely. She cautioned against potential technology-facilitated gender-based violence and child exploitation, stressing the need for protective measures alongside infrastructure improvements.
The Minister concluded by advocating for a collaborative effort to ensure that advancements in connectivity are matched with social responsibility and the well-being of families. By promoting a culture of awareness and responsibility, Tabuya believes that technology can be harnessed for beneficial purposes.
In summary, as Fiji embraces new technological advancements, there is an essential need for a balanced approach that prioritizes safety and awareness, ensuring that the benefits of connectivity contribute positively to society. This message serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible internet usage in the face of evolving digital landscapes.
