The under-15 team from Marist Brothers High School had significant motivation in the semi-finals of the Vodafone Super Deans tournament. They came into the match determined to win, particularly in light of their vice-captain Senitiki Kuruvadua losing his father earlier that week.
Kuruvadua played a pivotal role in securing a 22-7 victory against Gospel High School in the semi-finals. The young athlete, who has family ties to Nakasaleka in Kadavu, maintained his composure while dealing with the loss of his father.
“I’ve just lost my father recently. He had kidney failure, and being here wasn’t easy knowing that all the plans for the funeral are being made at home,” he expressed. “It wasn’t easy because I was close to my father, but I would like to thank God for giving me the strength to play this week and for the opportunity to be part of this team.”
Tevita Kuruvadua, his father, was a passionate supporter of his rugby aspirations. “He was my number one fan, and I really miss him,” the 15-year-old added. “I tried to be strong for my teammates since I am the vice-captain, and I didn’t want to let them down, so I wanted to come and show them that I am a strong man and that everything happens according to God’s will.”
The team wore black armbands in solidarity with Kuruvadua and to honor his father. “The message back in the changing room was that we are all playing for my dad, for our parents who have supported us, for our coaches, trainers, and managers for their time in training, and for ourselves. My dad would’ve told me to play for my team and family, to give my best, and to enjoy the game.”
Kuruvadua and the Marist team are set to face Suva Grammar School in the final next weekend.
