A 19 by 4 meter mural emphasizing conservation and sustainability was unveiled in Suva last week in celebration of World Environment Health Day. The mural was created by local artists Jack Eastgate, Hefrani Barnes, and Mele Nabola as part of an “Art for Change” initiative in collaboration with Greenhouse Coworking and the Agence française de développement (AFD) Group.

Maria Ronna Luna Pastorizo-Sekiguchi, founder of Greenhouse Coworking and The Greenhouse Studio, expressed her belief in the transformative power of art and creativity through partnerships. “Using art to convey messages, transform perspectives, and inspire action is visual storytelling at its finest,” she stated. Ms. Sekiguchi highlighted the alignment of Greenhouse’s vision with that of the AFD Group, which recognizes art’s potential to drive change.

The AFD Group, a French public entity, is dedicated to funding and managing impactful global projects that support sustainable development in economic, social, and environmental areas while aligning with the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals. In the Pacific region, the AFD Group is committed to addressing climate change, enhancing the resilience of island communities, and protecting biodiversity.

AFD representative in Fiji, Elodie Vitalis, expressed pride in partnering with Greenhouse Coworking to promote awareness of conservation and climate change. “This initiative represents a valuable opportunity to emphasize mutual values such as climate action, conservation, human development, and stewardship,” she commented. Additionally, she noted the initiative’s support for training two young female artists who are dedicated to achieving a sustainable future for Fiji.

The vibrant mural, located on Greenhouse Coworking’s wall at the intersection of Des Voeux Rd and McGreggor Rd in Suva’s central business district, is seen by its creators as a hopeful portrayal of a sustainable future for Fiji and the world. Ms. Sekiguchi mentioned that since the opening of Greenhouse Coworking in 2021, the intent to feature impactful artwork has been a priority.

She noted AFD as an ideal partner, being one of their members. The Art for Change initiative will also enable the artists to conduct regular paid art classes for the public at no cost to the venue. Ms. Sekiguchi expressed a desire for further collaborations to expand the initiative beyond murals and classes.

There is a vision for Des Voeux Rd to evolve into an arts precinct, with existing art at venues such as Mana Coffee, the Alliance Francaise, and Baka Books. Future plans include guided art walks and creative markets, fostering engagement with various artists and creative entrepreneurs.
