Viber Groups and Road Safety: A Recipe for Recklessness?

Motorists have been warned about the dangers of creating Viber groups to disseminate information regarding police traffic checkpoints and speed radar locations. This behavior is intended to evade road safety enforcement, and it has raised significant concerns among law enforcement officials.

Acting Divisional Police Commander for the Northern region, Superintendent of Police Eroni Soqosoqo, stated that these groups undermine police efforts and present serious risks to road safety. He pointed out that when drivers receive alerts about checkpoints, they tend to slow down but often exceed speed limits immediately afterward, which can lead to accidents. “These actions disrupt police operations, and those involved will be held accountable,” SP Soqosoqo emphasized.

In light of the upcoming New Year celebrations, the police in the Northern Division are taking extra measures to ensure public safety, including increased foot patrols and road operations.

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has also highlighted the issue of driver fatigue as a significant contributor to road accidents in Fiji. The LTA advises that prolonged driving without breaks can lead to increased accident risk and encourages motorists to take necessary rests during long journeys. Additionally, passengers are urged to be vigilant and to speak up if they notice any signs of driver fatigue, such as drowsiness or erratic behavior.

The LTA promotes the “Stop, Revive, and Survive” strategy to enhance road safety and reduce the incidence of accidents. They assert that actions interfering with police and LTA operations, such as creating Viber groups for checkpoint alerts, must cease, as these practices jeopardize public safety efforts.

In summary, both the police and the LTA are united in their call for responsible driving and community cooperation to foster safer roads. As the New Year approaches, it presents an opportunity for all road users to reflect on safe practices and contribute to a secure travel environment. With the right commitment from motorists and assistance from authorities, we can look forward to safer roads in the coming year.
