Thirteen bean cart vendors previously situated near the Suva Bus Stand have been moved to the Suva Municipal Market in a proactive measure to enhance safety ahead of significant road upgrades in the area. Tevita Boseiwaqa, chair of the Suva City Council (SCC), emphasized the necessity of this relocation due to potential hazards posed by heavy machinery, which will be utilizing the MPI car park as part of the Fiji Roads Authority’s (FRA) redevelopment initiatives.
Mr. Boseiwaqa articulated the risks associated with the vendors operating near ongoing construction, stating, “It’s a big risk if we allow them to continue operating business in the area; we would be liable to safety and hazard breaches.” He added that efforts to redevelop the western bus stand could potentially unfold in the next fiscal year, but the immediate focus remains on completing the road upgrades.
In guiding the vendors through this transition, the council has diligently worked with stall holders over the last few months, issuing reminders and exploring suitable alternative locations for their operations. A council statement underscored that these steps aim to ensure a smooth and fair relocation process, fully adhering to Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) standards while accommodating necessary infrastructure enhancements.
Mr. Boseiwaqa expressed that this transparent relocation process was well received by the vendors, highlighting a collaborative approach that looks out for both public safety and the vendors’ livelihoods.
This initiative not only addresses safety concerns but also demonstrates the council’s commitment to supporting small businesses, fostering a community-focused environment that prioritizes the well-being of its citizens.
In summary, the relocation of the bean cart vendors from the Suva Bus Stand to the municipal market showcases a responsible approach to urban development while preserving local commerce and safety. The actions taken by the Suva City Council signal a positive and collaborative spirit in navigating changes that impact the community.
