Vasemaca Garnett has recently received the General Service Medal for his service in Iraq, a recognition awarded two months ago. The General Service Medal is typically given to members of the Fijian military who have completed a year of service in peacekeeping missions, while the UNAMI medal is presented by the United Nations for service in Iraq.

Vasemaca is part of the Fijian military contingent, which includes 135 personnel currently designated for deployment in Iraq over the course of a year. He hails from the Rewa region and has expressed his gratitude for receiving the medal, noting that it signifies the acknowledgment of his efforts.

Despite being far from Fiji, family support has played a crucial role in his morale, helping him navigate the challenges of being away from home. Vasemaca acknowledged that the difficulties of separation take a toll, particularly in maintaining connections with his wife and three children.

His commitment to service represents a significant contribution to peacekeeping initiatives and highlights the important role of support systems in maintaining the well-being of service members and their families.

Moreover, Vasemaca’s recognition is not unique; twenty other women serving alongside him in Iraq have also been awarded the General Service Medal, showcasing the vital contributions women make in peacekeeping operations.

This acknowledgment reflects the dedication and resilience of those who serve far from home. It emphasizes the importance of recognizing their sacrifices while also highlighting the support that helps them endure the challenges of military service.
