Vasemaca Garnett was recently awarded the General Service Medal for his service in Iraq, a recognition he received two months ago. The General Service Medal is typically awarded to a member of the Fijian military who has completed a year of service, along with the UNAMI medal for deployment in Iraq.
Vasemaca is one of 135 Fijian soldiers currently serving in Iraq, and he hails from the Rewa region. He expressed that receiving the medal was not his main focus; rather, he is driven by his commitment to serve and perform his duties effectively.
He demonstrated notable humility and dedication when reflecting on his achievement, acknowledging that, despite being far from home, he receives strong support from his family during challenging times, offering a sense of comfort and encouragement.
Vasemaca’s involvement in the military emphasizes the significant contributions of women in service, showcasing the importance of resilience and teamwork in overcoming the hardships faced while deployed.
In a poignant reminder of the sacrifices military members make, he stated that it’s challenging being away from his family and children, but they are a source of motivation for him to persist in his duty.
The recognition of his service, alongside that of 20 other women who also received medals, serves to inspire future generations, particularly young women, to remain steadfast in their efforts and continue striving through challenges.
This story highlights the resilience and dedication of military personnel who continue to serve their countries with honor, bringing hope and inspiration to those around them.
