Vanuatu launched its 2026 World Cup Qualifiers campaign with a resounding 4-1 victory over Samoa at VFF Freshwater Stadium in Port Vila.
Under the direction of coach Juliano Schmeling, Vanuatu showcased an aggressive strategy from the outset, with experienced striker Alex Saniel scoring just seven minutes into the match. Captain Brian Kaltak played a pivotal role, assisting fast-paced John Alick to extend the lead to 2-0 in the 37th minute, leaving Vanuatu in a strong position at halftime.
Samoa managed to respond in the 55th minute when substitute striker Nathan Viliamu capitalized on a counterattack, skillfully evading the defense and slotting the ball into an empty net after receiving a pass from Dauntae Mariner. However, Vanuatu quickly renewed their dominance as Alick netted their third goal just two minutes later.
Vanuatu maintained their attacking momentum, generating several scoring opportunities before Bong Kalo finalized the score with a remarkable long-range shot in injury time.
Both teams will return to action during the November FIFA international window, facing off in Group B matches against New Zealand and Tahiti in Hamilton and Auckland.
