The Ministry of Employment is currently looking into reports concerning a group of Bangladeshi migrant workers who have allegedly left their jobs. Minister Agni Deo Singh acknowledged the situation, stating that efforts to fully investigate the matter have been hindered due to the workers’ absence.
Singh highlighted that while there have been accusations regarding the mistreatment of these workers, their disappearance has made it challenging to address these claims effectively. He emphasized the Ministry’s duty to ensure that both workers and employers comply with the established regulations, stating that the same minimum labor standards applicable to Fijian workers also extend to migrant workers.
“We handle cases where employers fail to uphold these standards,” he noted. The Ministry has received reports indicating that the missing workers cannot be found, and the employer is actively trying to locate them. Singh encouraged workers who have grievances against their employers to visit the nearest Ministry office to file their complaints.
He reassured that the Ministry is dedicated to conducting thorough investigations into any allegations of mistreatment once the workers are located. “This is how we can truly assist them,” he said, adding that they must first ascertain the whereabouts of the employees.
In summary, while the situation is concerning, it highlights the Ministry’s commitment to ensuring the welfare of all workers, regardless of their origin, and the importance of addressing labor issues fairly and comprehensively. There is hope that once the missing workers are found, their grievances can be properly addressed, leading to improved working conditions and a stronger support system for migrant workers in the country.
