Valemei’s Heartfelt Return: A Family’s First Look at International Rugby

Semi Valemei is set to make his return to the Vodafone Fiji Bati for the upcoming Pacific Championship, marking a special occasion as it will be the first time his family watches him play on the international stage. The 23-year-old winger, who plays for the Canberra Raiders in the NRL and has previously represented Fiji Bati in the 2022 Rugby League World Cup, expressed his excitement.

He shared, “This time, it’s more than special because my parents and all my siblings will be watching the game. The last time they saw me play was back in our village when I was playing 7s.”

Valemei felt honored to be selected for the national team, especially given the competitive field of talented Fijian wings. “I’m really grateful to have been chosen to play for the national side this year,” he noted.

The Fiji Bati team recently visited Valemei’s village in Navidamu, Seaqaqa, an experience he described as memorable. “The people back home loved it. They adored the boys. They’ve only seen them on television, so seeing them in person was truly special,” he said.

He confirmed that he is contracted with the Cowboys for the next year and intends to keep pursuing his rugby league career. “I’m going to do my best to continue playing rugby league,” he added.

Valemei’s encouragement to young players is clear: “Never give up and keep chasing your dreams.”

The Fiji Bati will face the Papua New Guinea Kumuls this Saturday at 8.10pm at HFC Bank Stadium.
