USP Students’ Association Stays Neutral Amid Controversy

The University of the South Pacific Students’ Association (USPSA) has announced that it will refrain from getting involved in the ongoing situation between USP Management and a terminated employee, emphasizing the importance of adhering to the established legal processes for resolving such issues.

Association President Lepani Naqarase expressed respect for the protocols outlined in the university’s Ordinances and Statutes as well as those of the USP Council. He indicated that, in response to concerns raised by some members, USPSA executives, including those from the Laucala Branch, held discussions with senior management. This team included the Vice-Chancellor, the Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Research and Innovation, the Dean of the Graduate School, and the Head of the School relevant to the matter, to address the arrangements made for affected students.

Naqarase noted that the USPSA has engaged with students who were temporarily impacted by the situation and has taken their concerns into consideration. He stated that the Association is dedicated to promoting and ensuring the welfare of all its students.

After the meetings, USPSA leaders expressed satisfaction with the management’s arrangements, which they believe will allow services to continue for affected students without disruption. Naqarase further stated that the USPSA would continue to monitor the situation and maintain open communication with university management, including Vice-Chancellor Professor Pal Ahluwalia.
