USP Staff Association Demands Action Amid Investigation Delays

The Association of the University of the South Pacific Staff (AUSPS) has voiced significant concerns regarding the university’s delays in commencing investigations. In a statement, the Association asserted that the USP Council Secretariat, accountable to the Vice-Chancellor, has hindered the process, casting doubt on the investigation’s independence and fairness.

AUSPS noted that a Special USP Council Meeting took place four weeks ago, yet the ‘terms of reference’ for the investigation have not been finalized, with the November Council meeting approaching rapidly. The union has demanded that investigations be conducted fairly and transparently, free from delays or interference.

The Association also pointed out that classes have been canceled due to staff involvement in the strike, countering the university’s claim of minimal disruption to classes. AUSPS stated, “Students have also joined the strike – there were classrooms that were closed, which has been reported by the media.”

Additionally, AUSPS criticized Vice-Chancellor Professor Pal Ahluwalia for his lack of responsiveness and openness with the unions, revealing that out of four scheduled quarterly meetings, only one occurred this year. The Staff Policy Committee Meetings, intended to address key issues and grievances, have also failed to convene this year, with just two meetings held in the previous year.

The Association argued that this lack of engagement indicates that the Vice-Chancellor is not prioritizing communication with staff. They emphasized that no senior management team members have approached the strike location to understand the protesters’ concerns. AUSPS stated that the senior management appears disconnected from the preferred Pacific method of dialogue.

AUSPS reiterated that the staff strike arises from valid, long-standing concerns and asserted that the ongoing delays further erode trust in the leadership. They urged the Council to establish a timeline for the investigation and ensure the report is prepared for the upcoming November Council Meeting.
