The Association of the University of the South Pacific Staff (AUSPS) is urging for an immediate change in leadership at the university. Rosalia Fatiaki, the AUSPS general secretary, made this appeal during a press conference following a secret ballot regarding potential strike action at the Laucala Campus.
Fatiaki shared her concerns about the behavior of USP’s vice-chancellor and president, Professor Pal Ahluwalia. This request for a leadership overhaul comes in light of recent controversies, including the dismissal of biology lecturer Dr. Tamara Osborne-Naikatini, who was let go over allegations of “gross misconduct” after allegedly disclosing confidential information about Professor Ahluwalia’s contract review in an interview.
Moreover, Fatiaki indicated that AUSPS has ongoing issues related to salary adjustments and the fair treatment of staff. She mentioned that the decision to consider strike action originated from an earlier union meeting, where a motion was passed to pursue this course.
“The approval for the secret ballot today is crucial, as it will determine our next steps regarding the removal of the vice-chancellor and president of USP,” said Fatiaki. “The mandate from this ballot will guide our subsequent actions.”
To move forward with the strike, over 50 percent of the union’s 560 members based in Fiji must show their support. Fatiaki expressed disappointment, stating that the union has repeatedly attempted to engage with management to find resolutions, but their efforts have been met with resistance.
The AUSPS is now waiting for a reply from the Education Minister, following a letter sent nearly two weeks ago.
