USP Secures Patent for Revolutionary Cybersecurity Solution in Power Grids

The University of the South Pacific (USP) has been awarded a full patent by the Indian Patent Office for a system designed to combat cyberattacks on power grids. This innovative project was co-invented by Dr. Utkal Mehta, an academic from the School of Information Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Physics (STEMP), in collaboration with the National Institute of Technology India.

The patent secures the intellectual property rights for the system’s unique design and functionality. Dr. Mehta emphasized the growing dependence on electricity, which has intensified the need for stable power grids, particularly in regions like Fiji. He noted that cyberattacks present serious risks to the reliable operation of these grids, especially within thermal power plants.

To tackle these issues, Dr. Mehta and his team developed a new system called the Tri-parametric Fractional Controller (TFC), which integrates traditional and fractional control methods for optimal frequency regulation. He asserted that this innovative solution is vital for improving grid stability and resilience against cyber threats, contributing to a more reliable energy infrastructure in Fiji and beyond.

The creation of the TFC involved thorough research, advanced simulations, and hardware-in-loop testing, confirming its effectiveness in managing frequency fluctuations arising from cyberattacks and network delays. This success is largely attributed to the cutting-edge engineering labs available at USP’s Engineering faculty.

Dr. Mehta acknowledged the significant support from various departments at USP, highlighting the school’s commitment to pioneering advancements in engineering. The development holds great potential for bolstering the security and reliability of power grids on a global scale, as reflected in initial findings published in the IEEE Journal.

Professor Bibhya Sharma, head of STEMP, echoed this sentiment, expressing pride in the school’s environment that fosters innovation and development, showcasing the caliber of faculty committed to educating students in accredited professional degrees.
