USP on the Hot Seat: Upcoming Meeting to Tackle Key Issues

Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad has announced that a meeting is anticipated for next week to address the ongoing challenges facing the University of the South Pacific (USP). However, the Deputy Prime Minister has stressed that the government will not interfere with the university’s operations.

“Next week we will convene to discuss how we can address any issues if they exist,” Prasad stated. He emphasized that the government will not meddle in the university’s governance or managerial decisions. “The government representatives on the USP Council are responsible for raising any concerns regarding USP during council meetings.”

Additionally, Maritino Nemani, the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Employment, was inquired this week about the ministry’s intention to facilitate discussions between USP’s management and staff unions. He affirmed, “Yes, due process is being followed.”
