USP Meeting: Tensions Rise, But No Government Intervention

Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad has announced that a meeting is set to take place next week to address ongoing challenges facing the University of the South Pacific (USP). However, the Deputy Prime Minister has emphasized that the government will not interfere in the university’s operations.

“Next week we will meet to discuss how we can resolve, if there are any issues,” Prasad stated. He reiterated that the government would refrain from meddling in the university’s governance structure or management decisions.

“There are government representatives on the USP Council, and any issues related to USP will be brought up by those members at the council,” he added.

In related developments, Ministry of Employment permanent secretary Maritino Nemani confirmed that the ministry is considering mediation between USP management and staff unions. “Yes, due process is being applied,” Nemani stated.
