The University of the South Pacific (USP) Council is set to reconvene today to discuss concerns surrounding human resource decisions and processes within the institution, including the initiation of an independent review. Pro-Chancellor and Acting Chair of the Council, Emeritus Professor Pat Walsh, indicated that one of the agenda items for the meeting will be the appointment of a University Visitor, a position that has been vacant since May 2022.
The Council expressed its worries regarding the extended vacancy of the University Visitor, who serves as the ultimate authority for resolving internal disputes at the USP. According to Article 27 of the USP Charter, the Council is responsible for appointing the University Visitor. However, the Council has faced difficulties in identifying suitable candidates for the role and is encouraging member countries to recommend potential individuals.
In addition to addressing the Visitor position, the Council will review the terms and conditions associated with the role to enhance its attractiveness to high-quality candidates. The findings regarding the human resource decisions and processes will also be presented during this meeting, which is currently taking place in the Cook Islands.
Overall, the USP Council’s proactive steps towards addressing their internal processes and filling critical positions reflect a commitment to improve the university’s governance and operational effectiveness. With the engagement of member countries in the search for a University Visitor, there is potential for collaborative solutions that could benefit the entire institution moving forward.
