The University of the South Pacific (USP) Council is scheduled to convene later this month in the Cook Islands to address the allegations directed at Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Pal Ahluwalia. Education Minister Aseri Radrodro confirmed this development, stating that the assembly is also expected to establish the ‘Terms of Reference’ for the investigation.

Furthermore, the Minister highlighted that the meeting will involve confirming the role of the Pro-Chancellor, currently held on an acting basis by Dr. Heila Heine. Radrodro mentioned that the first voting round has already been completed, with a second round anticipated shortly.

“This is something that all council members are awaiting, regarding the Acting Pro-Chancellor, the Secretariat, and the legal guidance necessary to inform members about the status of the Pro-Chancellor appointment,” Radrodro said.

In summary, the upcoming council meeting represents a crucial moment for USP, as it seeks to address serious concerns while ensuring transparent governance processes are upheld. It is a significant step towards clarifying leadership positions and fostering accountability within the institution.

This situation could ultimately lead to a more stable and effective leadership structure at USP, which could benefit the university community in the long run. By addressing the ongoing issues head-on, the council is demonstrating a commitment to transparency and governance, which is essential for the trust of students and faculty alike.
