Usamate Urges Fiji to Look Beyond FijiFirst’s Deregistration

Independent Member of Parliament Jone Usamate has stated that the deregistration of FijiFirst is now behind them, urging everyone to look forward. He dismissed claims that the party was operating under a “two-man rule” as mere speculation.

During his appearance on The Lens@177, Usamate emphasized his commitment to represent all Fijians, guided by principles of equality, meritocracy, and diversity. He noted that these values have always been central to him and are shared by his colleagues in the Bloc of 16 in Parliament.

“What has happened has happened,” he said. “Currently, we are independent Members of Parliament, and we continue to fulfill our roles to the best of our abilities. It is unproductive to dwell on the past.”

Usamate expressed the need to move forward and focus on contributing positively as an Opposition, offering alternative perspectives and holding the government accountable when necessary. He acknowledged the government’s tendency to highlight issues in a particular manner and stressed the Opposition’s role in providing a different viewpoint.

He noted that it is essential for the Opposition to engage with the community, gathering opinions and concerns to communicate effectively with the government. Usamate has a long history in politics, having served as a Cabinet Minister during the military government’s rule before joining FijiFirst.

“I am grateful for the opportunity I had to serve in that capacity, and since last year, we have been in Opposition,” he stated. “I appreciate the lessons learned during my ministerial role, participating in various activities, which have equipped me better for my current position.”

Usamate concluded by reiterating his intention to focus on his current responsibilities and to progress moving forward.
